More about the artist of "The chair"
István Kulinyi is a versatile, experimental artist. He examines his environment, his age, the processes taking place in life with a searching eye. His work covers a wide range of fine arts: design graphics, visual, object and installation design, photography, teaching, writing.
As a graphic artist, he is characterized by a critical voice, sometimes a gloomy world. As an applied graphic artist, in the 70s and 80s he works primarily as a designer of cultural posters. The creation of exhibition visual plans and installation graphics (TVK, Hungexpo) meant an exciting opportunity for experimentation, testing new materials and techniques. He dealt with complex image design (K and H Bank), made unique montages, illustration series for hotel rooms (Kempinski Hotel). He experimented for years with the creation of fine art games and objects that developed visual thinking and creativity. In recent times, he has focused primarily on designing art calendars.
An important part of his work is that, recognizing the cultural changes and professional shortcomings in Hungary, he has been working for many years to professionally protect Hungarian designers. In 1985, in honor of the 100-year-old Hungarian poster, he edited and designed a contemporary poster book entitled Today's Hungarian Poster. During 1992, he organized the Hungarian Design Cultural Foundation, collected material and designed the Design '92 and '94 books. Shortly after, in 1996, he edited a graphic trade paper called Advertising and Graphics, and then launched the Step into the Future competition.
István Kulinyi is an international artist who took part to several solo and group exhibitions worldwide. He exhibited his works in Budapest, Vienna, München, Los Angeles, New York, Gent, Berlin.
